YMCA Kirkham Update
Discussions continue regarding the future of the YMCA Kirkham after the damage caused by high winds last year.
The roof of the facility suffered significant damage during Storm Arwen when a section of the roof was torn loose, causing damage to other sections of the structure and leaving part of the interior exposed. The pool and gym were immediately closed until further notice and the building made safe. As part of the specification for reinstating the roof we carried out further condition surveys on the wider building and these surveys highlighted other issues which require significant investment to bring the premises back into operation.
We are conscious of the disruption caused but through management of schedules at other centres we have been able to relocate many of the school swimming lessons and are working with the school PE departments and head teachers to ensure we offer as many children as possible the opportunity for school swimming lessons. We will continue to look at operations on an ongoing basis in order to maximise swimming availability.
The provision of swimming and leisure facilities in Kirkham is important to YMCA and we are continuing to work hard with our partners to explore the best way forward for the centre. As soon as we have further information, we will readily share this with our members and the wider community.
