David and Janet’s Inspiring Wellness Journey

When David and Janet joined the YMCA Fylde Coast’s Active Wellness Suite, they were at very different stages in their lives but facing similar challenges. David was recovering from a full knee replacement in July 2024, determined to regain mobility and return to his beloved hobby of golf. Janet, initially accompanying David to support his recovery, unexpectedly found herself needing the suite as well after breaking her foot in August 2024.

“We found the Active Wellness Suite through Facebook. The NHS services couldn’t offer enough physiotherapy support, so we looked for alternatives. The suite turned out to be exactly what we needed.” Equipped with 12 power-assisted machines designed for low-impact exercise, the suite offered a perfect solution. “The machines are approachable—the purple colours make everything feel less intimidating.”

The suite’s welcoming and friendly atmosphere made it easy for the couple to feel at home. “The staff are fantastic—always there to help but never pushy. It’s such a relaxed environment; there are no cliques, and everyone is happy to chat”. For both David and Janet, the physical improvements have been remarkable. David has reduced his walking-stick usage and has significantly reduced his use of painkillers, while Janet has regained a full range of movement in her foot and ankle.

The benefits haven’t been just physical. “Injuries and surgeries take a toll on your mental health” Janet shared with us. “Seeing progress, even in small steps, makes you feel happier and more capable in your daily life. It’s things like being able to push a trolley or get in and out of the car that you start appreciating again.”

The community aspect has also been a highlight. “Everyone helps each other out—it’s not competitive or intimidating at all.” David highlighted. His enthusiasm for the suite is infectious, as he often shows his friends videos and photos of the equipment and clean facilities.

Now visiting the Active Wellness Suite up to five times a week, David and Janet are already looking toward the future. David’s goal is to return to playing at Fleetwood Golf Club, while Janet is eager to start aqua classes and swimming, activities they plan to explore together thanks to the confidence they’ve built, enabled by the diverse offering of the Active Wellness membership.

Their message to others is clear: “Don’t hesitate—give it a try. It’s affordable, quick, and so worth it, it’s a life-changer.” Janet said. “The circuit takes less than an hour, and you leave feeling great. For just £25 a month, the value is incredible.”

David and Janet’s journey highlights the transformative power of the Active Wellness Suite—not just in helping people recover but in empowering them to rediscover life and connect with others in a similar position.
