Victoria Transforms Her Life at YMCA

Since 1996, YMCA St Annes has been a part of Victoria’s life, but in recent years, it has become her haven of health, fitness, and friendship. Victoria’s journey back to the YMCA and her inspiring transformation began with a single class in 2012. Following a challenging period marked by personal loss and health concerns, she re-joined the YMCA community, motivated by the lively energy of Leigh Hamilton’s Zumba class (one of our amazing YMCA fitness instructors).

A few years down the line, life brought new challenges, including menopause, high blood pressure, and pre-diabetic warnings, all of which impacted her physical and mental well-being. At her heaviest, she weighed 13 stone 10 pounds. But Victoria was determined to turn things around, and the YMCA provided the right support and environment for her to do so.

With a blend of exercise classes, a supportive network of YMCA friends, and her own dedication, Victoria has since lost over 3 stone, now weighing in at a healthy 10 stone 3 pounds — just 3 pounds off her target weight. She’s achieved this transformation not by cutting out life’s pleasures but by finding balance. “You can do it and still enjoy the best things in life,” she says, noting that she and her husband still indulge in their favourite Indian meal every Sunday.

What keeps Victoria going is the sense of community and friendship at YMCA St Annes. “It’s like my second home,” she shares. She’s found a welcoming group of classmates who motivate each other to keep showing up. If someone misses a class, there’s always a quick message to check in — a reminder that no one is on this journey alone. Her love for the YMCA goes beyond the fitness aspect; she appreciates the warm smiles from the ladies at reception and the encouragement she receives from her instructors. “They’re inspiring, happy people, and they make it fun to come back each week,” Victoria told us.

Now retired, Victoria stays active with a weekly routine that includes everything from Zumba and Pilates to the more intense Les Mills classes, Body Combat, Body Pump, and Body Balance. The YMCA Y:Active mobile app and her Apple Watch help her track her progress, celebrate milestones, and stay committed to her goals. Being named “Woman of the Year” at Slimming World was a proud moment, and she continues to enjoy the rewards that come with her journey — from improved health to a candle she won in a class raffle.

For anyone who thinks “50+ classes” are an easy pass, Victoria has a word of advice: “Try out as many classes as you can and don’t shy away from the over fifties classes as they are more challenging than you think”. She loves the energy and laughter these classes bring, and she credits them with helping her feel younger, healthier, and more vibrant.

Victoria’s journey is proof that with community support, a balanced approach, and a place like the YMCA, you can change your life without giving up the things you love. Whether it’s a lively Zumba class or a supportive friend in the locker room, YMCA St Annes has become a vital part of her life — and she can’t imagine her journey happening anywhere else.
