We are pleased to announce that our bid for the Government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund has been successful, resulting in a £220,000 grant.

Launched earlier this year by Sport England, the fund was made available for public sector leisure centres to give them the best chance of recovery once restrictions are lifted.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “So far we have […]

Hi Everyone, below is the most recent press release published on 20th November with our partners at Wyre Council.
Today (20th November), Wyre Council put forward a report to propose additional funding to enable us to continue to provide a leisure service in Wyre. Whilst this provides at least some degree of certainty in the short term, unfortunately this comes with a recommendation that the centres at YMCA Poulton and Fleetwood remain closed until viable to re-open again.
As this is a fluid situation, the report is still in a proposal stage and will have to be passed by […]

#IAMWHOLE at YMCA Fylde Coast
Here at YMCA we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. That’s why we are proud ambassadors of the #IAMWHOLE campaign.
The #IAMWHOLE campaign aims to encourage young people to challenge and stand up against harmful language that often gets brushed off as banter and the negative stigma surrounding mental health. We know it’s not easy, but we want to encourage people to speak up and seek help.
Mental health difficulties can cost young people their education and employment prospects. Difficulties are common amongst young people […]

In the months leading up to the residential L was very adamant that he didn’t want to go. It was only a week before you managed to encourage him to actually go, but in his words “he was going but wasn’t going to do all the activities he would just watch the others”. He did feel very anxious about going but the school had put him at ease and told him he wouldn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to.
Luke went on the residential and if I’m being honest I was expecting a […]

Turning 40, feeling unfit and overweight, Lisa decided it was time to do something for herself.
“Finding the time to commit to exercise has always been a problem. I’m a busy full time mum, work part time as a Nurse and my husband works away so sorting out child care can be a problem. When I saw the couch to 5k programme ran on Wednesday mornings, on my day off, I had no excuse – it was perfect for me” Lisa explains. “Initially I was nervous about going, so I convinced a couple of friends to join up too. Daphne Stockton’s story began with a routine visit to her GP for her hypertension test to check her blood pressure. This trip to the doctor resulted in her being told that her Blood Pressure was too high and she weighed 19 stone and diagnosed as being obese.
Her nurse suggested that she be referred onto the Your Move Weight Management programme operated by the YMCA. However, she was apprehensive and had little faith in the programme as she had already tried slimming world and the Cambridge Weight loss plan with no results. But meeting with her Physical Activity Officer […]
Many new mums are desperate to get back into shape following the arrival of their bundle of joy and for others it is the furthest thing from their mind!
However the real reason behind the importance of beginning to exercise after pregnancy is not widely known and often overlooked.
Claire Nutton is one of YMCA’s qualified pre and post natal fitness instructors and is based at YMCA Thornton.
Claire explains: “There seems to be a real taboo around the pelvic floor and ladies awareness about the importance of this muscle group is low. It seems to have […]
Sport England recently launched their ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to celebrate those who already lead active lifestyles and to empower other women to join them.
The campaign is backed up by Sport England research which found 75% of women aged 14 – 40 years old want to be more active but that there are common reasons why women are stopping themselves from exercising.
Reasons included not wanting to look sweaty in front of others, believing they’re not fit enough or good enough at an activity or that they don’t have the right equipment. Some women also said […]

“I became healthier, fitter and 7 stone lighter”
Membership: Y:Active Gold Member
My journey began in January 2012. I was approaching my 40th birthday, a smoker and “medically obese” at nearly 18 stone. I could say I had a reality check. I don’t know what caused me to look at myself, but myself and my partner realised that we could not sustain our existing lifestyle.
We decided without much drama to give up smoking and embark on a fitness programme with the YMCA.
During 2012, we […]
“The YMCA enables me to keep healthy and exercise regularly due to the fantastic facilities provided for my children”

Michelle joined YMCA in 2010, leaving another gym because of the crèche services and range of activities her children can participate in with YMCA. A year ago I decided to change my lifestyle by stopping smoking and starting to run. To help improve my fitness and assist my running […]
“I found like minded people who were also encouraged to do more exercise”
Membership: Y:Active Silver Member
I have had my membership with YMCA for about 3 years and had not used it fully until Autumn 2012 when I joined the first Momenta Weight Management Programme. I found like minded people who were also encouraged to do more exercise. We tried body pump and Zumba, but then I started Swimfit and also Aqua Aerobics which I now do 3 times a week and enjoy very much. I […]
