7 healthy youngsters from Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre have been selected to participate in the official march past for Her Majesty the Queen during her visit to Accrington this Wednesday 16th May.

The youngsters aged between 7 – 13yrs have been invited to fly the flag for healthy active kids on the Fylde Coast as they all successfully graduated from the NHS Kids Get Active (MEND) Programme.

Wendy Voo, Y:Active MEND Officer said: “We were thrilled to receive the invitation to represent the local community in the march past. It is such an honour for the young people to be credited in this way and I’m sure they will remember this proud moment for many years to come.”

Two of the 7 graduates chosen from programmes across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre are Keely Parsons, age 12 from Blackpool and Kyle Kennedy, age 11 also from Blackpool. They along with the others were chosen to attend the celebrations as a well done for their commitment, hard work and dedication to the 10 week Kids Get Active programme.

Keely said: “I’m looking forward to seeing the Queen and I felt very proud to be chosen to attend.”

Young and not so young members of Fleetwood Swimming Club took part in the Swimathon Weekend and Big Splash Sports Relief Mile last weekend at Fleetwood YMCA, to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care. The Swimathon Weekend, the world’s biggest fundraising event, gave thousands of swimmers the opportunity to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief through the Swimathon’s established distance challenges and the new ‘Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief’.

Twenty six swimmers, aged between 8 to 50+ swam non-stop, except for a quick hydration break, for one and a quarter hours, covering approx 3000 lengths of Fleetwood YMCA pool between them. Each swimmer made a donation of at least £5 to take part in the event, and received a well earned medal and cap at the finish.

Pictured below some of the younger swimmers after the event with Luke Waite, Shona McGreevy, Sam Jones, Alex Jones and Ryan McGreevy (L – R)…

So St Annes YMCA won the initial 2012km Gold Challenge competition, but have they managed to keep up with the early pace they set, and stay ahead…

… FLEETWOOD YMCA are your new leaders as they have been absolutely smashing it in the last couple of weeks. A huge well done to all the Fleetwood YMCA team who have made a massive effort and racked up the kilometres. St Annes YMCA are coming second overall now and are determined to push Fleetwood all the way. Poulton YMCA round off the top three after a good week and are sure to be hunting down the top two in the remaining weeks.

A massive well done should also go to all the other teams who are hot on the heels of the top 3. With one week left of the challenge it is still anyone’s for taking, so make sure you encourage all your team members to clock up the km’s and make your team champions!

Totals as at Wed 9th May 2012…

Fleetwood YMCA – 8103.11km

St Annes YMCA – 4546.93km

Poulton YMCA – 2965.89km

Thornton YMCA – 2865km

Kirkham YMCA – 1857km

Lytham YMCA – 1737.1km

St Annes Pool & Gym YMCA – 135km

The Crown for Challenge 1 is Taken…

Just 1 and half weeks into the 2012 Gold Challenge and the team at St Annes YMCA have already gone and smashed it! Woop woop! Well done team and they are not stopping there – oh no they are going for their 2nd Gold Challenge Title to be the team to cover the most kilometers in the whole competition.

Bryce Foden, Fitness Manager said: “The St Annes Team has been focused from the start and it has definitely paid off, but we’re not a team to sit on our winnings, we’re going for the next competition title with same focus and determination.”

James Wheelhouse commented on Fylde Coast YMCA’s Facebook page: “Be all those great programmes I designed for the members there”.

BUT with all this confidence there are still others hot on their heels now…Thornton YMCA stepped up their action after last week’s result and were a close second for the main title just hours after St Annes crossed the 2012km line. Now Fleetwood YMCA have picked up pace and they are going for the 2nd title BIG time. Check back next week for all the latest Gold Challenge results. The 2012km challenge title may have been taken but there’s still competition 2,3 and 4! Remind yourself below…

Week 1 Results and all the Teams below…

Week 1 Results are in! Which team is in the lead so far? Team Thornton and Team Poulton aren’t messing about they’ve gone head to head challenging themselves and the current leaders… watch the vid of Fitness Instructors Kyle from Poulton and Dale from Thornton on the Y:Player now. And the results of week 1… St Annes YMCA are in the lead followed by Fleetwood YMCA. St Annes YMCA Pool & Gym seem as though they are yet to get off their starting blocks though ‘come on team’!
